What is the Resilience Project?
We launch the Resilience Project as a symbolic representation of the perseverance and resilience of the human spirit. Although at times we might feel like we are hanging on by a thread, our human spirit, both individually and as a community holds us together.
For 8 weeks, the Explorium will be home to works of art inspired by nature and science. As we move forward as a community, this "exhibition" serves as a reminder that we are resilient in the face of challenges.
Nature grows and survives.
Science pushes the boundaries of what is possible.
We, too, will grow, survive, and push through challenges.
Come enjoy the art exhibits by locally and nationally renowned artists. All artworks will be on display in the museum. Each week, we will have a featured artist and interactive STEAM activity for all visitors.
The Resilience Project exhibition is organized in partnership with artist and Explorium friend Tali Hinkis aka LoVid.

Join us for an interactive workshop all about seed dispersal! In celebration of Jillian Macdonald’s beautiful artwork honoring plants’ incredible root systems, our visitors today will be getting creative with methods of seed dispersal! Museum visitors will have the opportunity to create a native plant seed ball, and then engineer a way to launch their seed ball so that the seeds can take root!

Dickens Festival favorites The Mountain Maidens raise their energetic vocal harmonies and traditional instruments in a celebration of spring and renewal.
Their songs are a delight for all ages, and you might even find yourself singing and clapping along with their cheerful spirited tunes.

Join us for an interactive investigation into the Blueprint of Life! In celebration of Laura Splan’s gorgeous artwork ‘Renatured’, our visitors today will be examining DNA.
Using simple household materials we will extract DNA from fruit. Imagine being able to collect the directions for how to make a strawberry - come down to the museum and find out how!

Join us and AMSEAS for a beach walk and trash collection! Come one, come all to assist the Long Island Explorium and AMSEAS to clean up our beach! We will meet behind the museum, in the turtle park by the Big Chair, at 10am. Supplies will be provided by AMSEAS. Come and earn your volunteer hours working for the community in a Covid-safe outdoor activity!

In celebration of Han Qin’s incredible artwork ‘New Growth’, our visitors today will be taking a closer look at how trees suck water up from the ground using the beautiful technique of chromatography!

Do sea turtles have a GPS?
Join us for an interactive activity, all about sea turtle navigation! This week we are celebrating the wonderful artwork of Rachel Frank, who finds sea turtles just as inspiring as we do. Did you know loggerhead turtles can detect magnetic fields and create their own ‘magnetic map’ of the coastline. This lets them return home every year to exactly the same beach to reproduce, even after crossing whole oceans! Our visitors today will be creating their own navigating turtles and helping them to find their way home.

Dye-ing up a Storm!
5/22: In-Person/ Virtual Workshop: Dye-ing up a Storm!

During this workshop, we’ll be using pigments from nature like turmeric to explore a sustainable textile dyeing process. With the pigment, water, and a bit of heat, each participant will end the workshop with their very own dyed fabric!

Join us for an interactive activity using natural dyes! This week, we’re celebrating Brooke Singer’s artwork ‘Site Profile Flag,’ which uses the physical, biological, and chemical properties of soil to create brightly colored flags. Using pigments found in nature and a little bit of heat, guests will have the opportunity to use the textile dyes for themselves.

We investigate the lives and habits of those useful little creatures, worms! This week we are celebrating the stunning artwork of Zachary White, who was inspired by worms. Visitors this weekend become animal behaviorists as they design respectful, animal-friendly experiments to investigate the senses and reactions of earthworms.
