AMSEAS scientists will guide participants on an interactive, educational walk on the beach. Participants will be taught about the four species of sea turtles that utilize our waters seasonally and how human interaction threatens their lives during their time in our waters.
We will discuss the seasonal occurrence “cold stunning,” or hypothermia in sea turtles, and what the community can do to help as we work to protect these threatened and endangered species. Following the lecture we will walk the beach to learn how to monitor the beaches for hypothermic sea turtles, and remove harmful marine debris along the way. Participants will be encouraged to practice what they’ve learned by continuing to monitor their local beach throughout the fall and winter “cold stun season.”
