*LIVE* Online STEM Workshops with the Long Island Explorium!
Keep up the learning from home while you are away from school. Our highly trained educators will be reinforcing the NYSSLS cross cutting concepts during these innovative workshops.
Join us each day for interactive online workshops where we challenge you to discover, design and explore innovative STEM projects. We will use simple, everyday materials found in your own home. And, if you can’t find the materials, step up to the challenge and problem solve! There’s always a solution to the problem if we think outside the box!
These workshops are designed to develop an understanding in the Engineering Design Learning Standards. Students will plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
All these workshops are aligned with the NYS Science Learning Standards, ELA and Math Standards. We will be reinforcing the cross-cutting concepts in all workshops.

Our Previous Workshops
Monday, May 18th - Friday, May 22nd
10 am - 10 :45 am - Grades K - 2
11:15 am- 12 pm - Grades 3-6
Material list for the workshops can be found here.
Monday, May 18th – Ship Shape
Join us for an interactive workshop in which we combine math and art. How can the contents of the ship best be arranged to fit them all in the hull? What patterns can you spot in which shapes tessellate? Can you make a pattern that is symmetrical? How about one that is not symmetrical? Where are the lines of symmetry?
Wednesday, May 20th – Roll Your Bike *NEW*
We challenge you to get to grips with the physics of rolling objects. Riding a bicycle can become almost instinctive - but how are you actually controlling it to make it turn corners? Let’s model the situation on a much smaller scale using coins as unicycles and attempt to build a track with corners. Which coin do you predict will travel the furthest? Why do some bikes have wider tires than others? Can you spot any rules for when the coin will fall over?
Friday, May 22nd – To the Rescue!
An interactive workshop where we design a rescue package to be air-dropped to a village cut off by floods. We will use the engineering design process to ensure that the rescue package arrives safely and intact, and explore multiple possible answers to the problem of cushioning a hard landing. How does the shape of the package affect the speed it travels through the air? What forces are acting on the box as it falls? How can we structure the box to try and protect the contents?
