Supporting STEM Learning Outside the Classroom

*LIVE* Online STEM Workshops with the Long Island Explorium

Make Memorial Day memorable!

We're kicking off summer with a bang with FREE online STEM workshops all next week!

Experience our unique and interactive STEM workshops that help promote social interaction and creative thinking.

*LIVE* Online STEM Workshops with the Long Island Explorium!

Keep up the learning from home while you are away from school. Our highly trained educators will be reinforcing the NYSSLS cross cutting concepts during these innovative workshops.

Join us each day for interactive online workshops where we challenge you to discover, design and explore innovative STEM projects. We will use simple, everyday materials found in your own home. And, if you can’t find the materials, step up to the challenge and problem solve! There’s always a solution to the problem if we think outside the box!

These workshops are designed to develop an understanding in the Engineering Design Learning Standards. Students will plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.

All these workshops are aligned with the NYS Science Learning Standards, ELA and Math Standards. We will be reinforcing the cross-cutting concepts in all workshops.

Our Previous Workshops

Monday, May 25th - Friday, May 29th

10 am - 10 :45 am - Grades K - 2

11:15 am- 12 pm -  Grades 3-6

Material list for the workshops can be found here.

Monday, May 25th – Forces for Fun:  Rollercoasters

This is a fan favorite!  We challenge you to build a rollercoaster for a marble! We will explore Newton's Laws of Motion and how we can use these to ensure our marble has enough energy to get round the track but does not go flying off. Your rollercoaster will not have an engine - so how do we need to design it to ensure that the marble keeps rolling? Where does your marble get its energy from? How could you give it more or less energy? What happens if you change the initial height of your rollercoaster?

Wednesday, May 27th – Swim Power *NEW*

We explore movement through water! Participants will explore different ways that movement through water can be achieved - looking at humans, animals and vehicles. Why does one stroke move you faster than others? What is happening to the water as we move through it? How do Newton’s laws of motion apply to our movement? How about for a boat - can we create a working engine? What forces are acting on swimmers and boats?

Friday, May 29th – Map It!

Join us for an interactive workshop exploring how we can map our new environments! Students will become cartographers and work on producing accurate, topographic maps. We will focus on making measurements and representing information in an easy to understand, visual way. What measurement will you use on paper to represent a 1 ft distance in the room? How could you extend your map to cover the whole floor of your house? What color scale will you use to represent height in the room? How many feet are there in a meter?
